Pheasant Ridge

Pheasant Ridge

Playful angles and a generous use of gables, dormers, bays and bump-outs give this ranch plenty of appeal inside and out. The floor plan is oriented toward a rear view.

As with many of the plans in this book, the Pheasant Ridge can be built using several combinations of timber framing and structural insulated panels. Here, timber framing is used in all but the bedroom wing, garage and mudroom. (The shaded squares are post locations.)

It's not a huge house, but vaulted ceilings, lots of light, and the open intersection of the great room, dining room and kitchen give the house a sense of spaciousness and excitement.

The floor plan is free-flowing and practical, starting with a dramatic great room entrance for guests, and a direct mudroom-to-kitchen route for everyday ins and outs. The great action in the great room, dining room, pantry and laundry. With plenty of counters and cabinets, a work island/wet bar, great light from the dormer above and fresh herbs in the greenhouse, it's sure to be the favorite spot in the house.

On the other hand, let's look around a little more. The dining room is nice and bright, with a big bay window and dormer that matches the kitchen's. And now, the great room. Visualize if you will, the rear gable wall, filled with windows, framed and accentuated by posts and beams, coming to a peak 21 feet overhead. In the center of the room, a kingpost truss fans out overhead.

Depending on your taste and budget, the intersection of the great room ridge and that of the dining room/kitchen can be an architectural delight, with valley rafters descending from the center of the great room to the posts in the corners.

The bedroom wing is a world apart. The large master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling and windows on three sides. And though it may be small, "the Pentagon Room" will be preferred choice of kids and guests.
